Today's Silver Find
Went to the bank today to deposit my check, asked the teller if she had any half dollars. She had 3 coins in her drawer, I bought them and one of the coins was a 1967 Kennedy half...40%. They are still out there:proud:

Re: Today's Silver Find
67 is 40% silver? I thought that after 65 they were not made out of silver anymore. Correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Today's Silver Find
40% Silver Coins
In 1965, at the direction of Congress, when the U.S. Mint removed all silver from dimes and quarters, the silver content in half-dollars was reduced to 40%. (Containing 40% silver and 60% copper) These coins were minted from 1965 - 1969 for circulation. After that, all coins were produced of a copper and nickel composition. |

I found a 64 Kennedy and a 42 Walking liberty half in one roll of halves about one month ago. Two other rolls came up empty. The banker actually let me sort through them while there so I didn't have to buy the whole rolls and take them home, then bring them back. I told the young lad about the value of silver and explained to him how I just turned one dollar into 10. Perhaps I should have kept that a secret. A different time, a banker told me about a customer that brought in a "$50 coin" and wanted to exchange it for $50. The teller was originally from Eastern Europe and gladly purchased the coin and then sold it for $700 (back when spot was around that). I'm afraid the average american teller would have told him, "Sorry, I cannot accept that." Crackheads do the darndest things. |

I showed the Franklin halves to my friends and most of them didn't believe they were real money, our currency has become stagnant over the years. |
Re: Today's Silver Find
Last week or thereabouts, somebody posted a link to http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/board,224.0.html . Got me very motivated.
So I went to my bank and bought 8 rolls of halves. I told the teller I was having a 'poker game'. Didn't find a thing. Brought them back the next day and told her I broke even. Today, I go to a different bank and get 8 rolls for another 'poker game'. Found a nice 64 Kennedy and a halfway decent 67. Free silver. Since I'm short on the one roll, I'll return 7 rolls tomorrow and tell the teller, 'I lost'. |
Re: Today's Silver Find
I think this is a bad practice. Y'all stop crh right now. I order you to stop.
Only I am allowed to try and do this from now on mkay? http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.p...c,72725.0.html |
Re: Today's Silver Find
For a long stretch from 2005-2006 I tried to buy rolls of halves whenever I could. I stopped finding much, and it no longer seems worth my time, but your area may be different.
After looking through many thousands of halves, maybe over $10K worth over the months, I did get 19 90% halves and about 170 40%, if memory serves me correctly. If you're going to do this, it helps to have one bank that accepts your unrolled coins (it can take a lot of time to roll up a lot of coins, especially if they ask for your account number on the rolls) and to NEVER ask for coins at that location. They may get upset if you ask for coins, look through, and bring them back, over and over. Get the coins at any bank you pass by, but have that one you deposit at and never ask for them at. If you do try this, you'll eventually get good enough to recognize the ones with any silver just from looking at the edge. Only accept hand-wrapped rolls, generally in tan/brown wrappers (an elderly saver might have rolled these years ago.) Avoid tight new machine wrapped rolls (I NEVER found silver in those.) Good luck |
Re: Today's Silver Find
yes it sounds like a pain in the ass. say, how much face is a roll of halves anyhow? what's the count, ?

Re: Today's Silver Find
I have a friend that went to the bank on a regular basis and purchased boxes of half dollars to sort. He did this over about a two year period. He found silver every time, 90% and 40%. On average, about one percent of the coins were silver. Of the silver ones, about 2/3 or 3/4 were 40% and the rest 90%.
One time when I was helping him, we found 167 silver ones out of 2000. There were a couple rolls worth of 90% and the rest 40%. There were quite a few franklins and walkers. He showed me some real nice walkers he'd found during the time he was doing this. He also found a 1900 Barber once. The ones he got were always machine rolled. He said he liked those because the machine didn't know how to pick out the good ones. I think he sold out when the price got up around 15 last summer. He made good money I guess considering that he paid face value for everything and had fun finding them. |
Re: Today's Silver Find
Well, in a roll of halves is 10 bucks; 20 halves. So, if one is playing the odds, the risk-reward is somewhat slim. However, if you have several banks en route from point A to point B, it might be fun.
Yeah, I read several threads at the treasure forum regarding the use of one bank for a "dump" spot. I've got mine picked out. After spending about three hours reading at treasure, I was giddy. Some of those folks are scoring BIG-TIME. The rolls I got last week were terrible, but they were hand-rolled. The rolls today were also hand-rolled and three of them were exclusively bicentennial halves. Thus it appears that somebody liquidated a face value hoard. It was a very pleasent feeling to see the edge of the 1964 and the 1967 amongst all the clads, though. I think I'll do the eight rolls a week for awhile. Cheap thrills, but I still like the cheap thrills the best. |
